In a world that feels like it’s constantly shouting for your attention, we try to do things a little differently here at The Vault Expert. We’re about the conversations that actually matter: the ones that unlock power, purpose, and a bit of perspective.
Recently, I had the chance to sit down with someone who embodies that mission. Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins isn’t your typical politician. He’s a husband, a father, a retired Army Special Forces veteran, and currently, a candidate for Governor of Florida. But beyond the titles, Jay is a man whose life has been forged in the kind of fire most of us only read about.
Whether you’re a Floridian looking at the future of our state or someone just looking for a masterclass in resilience, Jay’s story is one you need to hear.
The Foundation: From the Farm to the Green Berets
Jay didn’t grow up with a silver spoon or a political roadmap. He was raised by his grandparents on a small family farm, learning early on that if you don’t do the work, the chores don’t get done. That “dirt-under-the-fingernails” upbringing laid the groundwork for a life defined by service.
After 9/11, Jay did what many brave Americans did: he stepped up. But he didn’t just join; he volunteered for the most elite, grueling path possible: Special Forces.
As a Special Forces medic, Jay’s job was to be the calm in the center of the storm. One of the most incredible moments he shared during our talk was from a 2007 deployment to Afghanistan. After being shot in the arm during a firefight, Jay didn’t just keep fighting: he literally performed surgery on himself so he could stay in the game and keep his teammates alive.
That’s not a movie script; that’s the reality of a man who understands accountability. Eventually, combat injuries led to the amputation of his leg. Most people would call it a career there. Jay? He requalified as a fully deployable Green Beret and served five more years on active duty.
Leadership Lessons: Accountability is Everything
When Jay talks about leadership, he isn’t quoting textbooks. He’s talking about the lessons learned in the mud, the blood, and the quiet moments of transition back to civilian life.
One of the core themes of our conversation was accountability. In the Special Forces, if you mess up, people die. In the political world, the stakes are different, but the need for that same level of “the buck stops here” mentality is desperate.
“It’s about serving something larger than yourself,” Jay told me. “It’s about looking at a problem and saying, ‘I own this,’ instead of looking for someone to blame.”
This is why we believe real growth and clarity come from these raw, honest experiences. Jay brings a veteran’s perspective to the table: a perspective that values the mission and the people over the noise and the optics.
Tackling the Florida Reality: Housing, Economy, and Wildlife
As we looked toward the future of Florida, we didn’t shy away from the tough stuff. We’re at a crossroads in the Sunshine State, and Jay’s vision for the Governor’s office is built on practical solutions, not just soundbites.
Housing Affordability
We all feel it. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or a veteran trying to settle down, the housing market is a beast. Jay discussed the need for responsible development: making sure we have homes people can actually afford without destroying the very things that make Florida beautiful.
Wildlife and Conservation
Speaking of beauty, Florida’s wildlife is part of our heritage. Jay’s background as the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee in the Senate gave him a unique view of how we balance growth with conservation. We talked about protecting our corridors and ensuring that as we grow, we don’t lose the “Old Florida” that we love.
Infrastructure and Data Centers
The world is changing fast. We talked about the rise of data centers and the infrastructure needed to keep Florida as an economic powerhouse. For Jay, it’s about being proactive: building the systems we need for 2030 and 2040 today, so we aren’t playing catch-up later.
Why Veterans Belong in Leadership
There’s a reason I’m such a vocal supporter of Jay. It’s not just because of his resume; it’s because of his character. Veterans bring a level of civic engagement and discipline that is often missing from our modern discourse.
We talked about how younger generations can get involved. It’s easy to get burnt out by the noise of social media, but Jay’s advice was simple: Ask tough questions. Engage with your community. Don’t just scroll: show up.

A Personal Note from Patti
As many of you know, I don’t just host these shows; I live them. I am supporting Jay Collins in his campaign for Governor because I’ve seen the man behind the uniform and the title. He is someone who listens as much as he leads. He’s someone who knows what it means to lose something and keep fighting anyway.
Our mission at The Vault Expert is to provide a space where voices add value and stories leave something behind. Jay’s story left me feeling more hopeful about the future of Florida.
